Gigantic Bridging Scheme.
The China-Mongolian proposed telegraph system is dwarfed by the Behring Strait project, which a group of American engineers are said to have been considering during the last two and a half years. The project is to connect Siberia and North America -in other words Europe and North America by a railway crossing Behring Strait. The Strait is less than 27 miles in width, or about 5 miles wider than the strait between Dover and Calais. As Behring Strait is divided from shore to shore by 7 or 8 islands nearly equidistant from each other, the bridges between them would each be shorter than the bridge across the Firth of Forth. The American engineers say that the railway could be built for less than £6000 a mile. It is believed that the Russians, who themselves are engaged upon a trans-Siberian railway system, are very friendly to this really great and inspiring American project.
