It is reported in Madrid that news has arrived of the occupation by Japanese of ths Pelew Islands, a portion of the Caroline Group claimed by Spain. The Governor of the Philippines has cabled to Spain for reinforcements, and preparations are being made for the despatch of troops.
Five thousand miners met at Quaregnon, and resolved upon a general strike on the Borinage coalfields, Belgium.
The officials of the Exhibition have refused to discharge the non unionist carpenters. Numerous encounters have taken place between free labourers and unionists. If the difficulty is prolonged it will interfere with the completion of the buildings at the proper date.
The Chicago strikers have agreed to work with non-unionists.
