the Manawatq Railway.
The Chairman at the annual meeting of the Company made an interesting and lengthy address, in which he mentioned that the line earned a little over £1000 per mile, which had been obtained under lower tariff of rates than the year previous. The engine mileage had increased 26,360 miles. The working expenses were 41 per cent. He stated that-the train service would remain as it is during the winter months, but should the: spring season bring a materially increased traffic another train would have to be provided. Eeferring to the Makerua swamp the chairman stated that what the company was endeavouring to carry out at present was removing the logs in the Tokomaru river. He trusted the time was approaching when the improved financial position of the r company would permit of the large outlay necessary to bring the whole of the swamp into profitable use. ' The report was adopted and a dividend of five per cent was made payable on 24th April. The retiring directors were re-elected. : ' .' ' ' Messrs Kember, Stuart and Powles were proposed as auditors and a poll was decided on j which will be decided on Wednesday next. ;: . ' ■*
