The Minister of Labour announced at tbe meeting of tailoresses at Wellington on Tuesday 'night that a lady factory inspector is about to be appointed by the Government. On Tuesday Messrs Gorton & Son hold a sale of stock at Awahuri. Tenders for leasing the Wirokino ferry, and for renting old ferry-house, and for carting must be sent in to the Town Clerk by noon on Monday. A Mr Farrar, a defeated candidate at the last English election has an article in the JNineteenth Century magazine, in which he pleads for the formation of a Candidates' Protection Society which would undertake to defend the strength, leisure, purse, and character of Parliamentary candidates. He thinks that such a sooiety could negotiate with the opposing candidates in order to dispense with personal canvassing, and generally in making things easy for those who are seeking the suffrages of the electors. They might also agree to limit cut-throat i in the jnatter of speeches and subscriptions. It maybe bo, even as it fa written in an Australian publication, but so it might be said of any country. " ; Everything is pos^ sible under Australian skies to a man with wit, pluck, energy, and character." From the many reports received of bankrupt financial institutions the men with' wit, pluck, energy, and no character have done very well. It is this that makes the jwonderful part of the Australian skies— too much kite-flying.
