The varions officers did their work well but we shall, . at another time, have some suggestions to make which would enable more interest being taken in the races. , The energetic Secretary, Mr E. P. The starter, Mr Ingram had plenty of exercise in travelling between the boatshed and the starting point up the river near the Me'isri Synods' mill. He reported that in only one race had he any trouble in getting a satisfactory start and that was in number three [race. The judges did their duty well, but Mr G. Gray kindly took the place of Mr Nixon, who was unable to attend. By the entries il W_s shoWn that the handicappers had bedn very sucdessf ul. Final Heat, Pair-pared Outrigger Bace for Mr Stansell's Trophies. To start 10.30 a.m. Howan and Redmond ... 1 J. Symons andH. Austin ... 2 This heat started near Mrs Robinson's house and finished some dis- : tance above the shed. The race Was Well rowed and turning.-the bend by Mr s Dun.dn*§j.. HoTVajjfahd Redmond j were leading and'up" to winning post gained at eyeiy stroke and won easy by.fourJengihs. The winning crew was coxswained by Lejsvis. 2. dPair-iiared . Handicap, Ist Heats. Distance, two miles., , _^irst prize, 2 silver medals, value -£4; se- , ; cond prize, trophy value £1 • 10s. /Entrance, 2s each crew. To start 11 a.m. Ist heat. Potter and Cowles, (lOscs)' ... 1 F. Shadbolt and M. Thompson 1 (ssec) ... ... ... 2 ; This race was started by Messrs Symons' mill as were all the following . races. . On rounding the point by the old ferry the two crews were, side by side but between the boat; shed and the wharf Shadbolt's boat I fouled Potter's who stopped rowing 'for a stroke 6r so, thus letting Shadbolt come in first. A protest, was lodged and settled by the committe giving the race to Potter's boat. r -The foul was tp be as the race was a particularly close and interesting and bade fair to be a wonderfully close finish. Young Lewis was the coxswain- of the winning crew. , 2nd heat. . . Imrie and Bradcock (20secs) ... 1 Morse and Bridge (25secs) ... 2 This was an excellent race and the losers have nothing to regret as for their size and weight they pulled well and plucky. At the turn ihey led but the steering put them out their cox wain taking them too wide. The winners only got in by three quarters of a length. Young Edwards steered the winners. 3rd heat; re :: -; - Howan- and Edwards ( Ssecs) ... 1 Nye and Shadbolt (scr) ... 2 This was only a row over for; Howan's crew as Nye turned into, the boatshed never rowing the course Shadbp't having been taken ill. 3. Trial Pair-oared., Inrigger Open to all comers. Distance, lj miles. First prize 2 silver medals,value £3; second prize, - 2 silver mounted pipes, value £1. Entrance, 2s each crew. To start 11.30 a.m. : Cowles and Potter (scr) ... 1: 0. and J. Symons (scr) ... 2 P. Shadbolt and P. Williams , (50 sees) 8 As far as the first boat was con. cerned the race was a procession the winners coming, in rowing as they liked. The race between the second ■ and third boats was a splendid fight, being hntly .conjjesi^ed all-the way and the.second place gained only -al. the post. 4. Greasy Pole, Fii-stprize; 1 alarm clock. ,To start 11.15 a.m .,.... _, -. " Three contested' and after a few tries Edward Coley succeeded in re. moving :the flag, ! " ■ . 5.
