The P esident deprecates the payment of bounties ! and subsidies, and says the reckless waste of millions in pensions is the bane of the Republican institutions. The wrongs inflicted hy the McKinley tariff must be rectified, though the work mast be undertaken wisely and ; without vindictiveness. President ! Cleveland aso hints that his Go- . vernment will gi'ipple with com- 1 mercial rings and corners inimical to the welfare of the people. Three hundred thousand people were present at the ceremony, which took place amid a scene of remarkable enthusiasm. The Vatican is pressing Great B.itain to establish diplomatic relations with it. The Transvaal has been devasted by a destructive storm. The damage is estimated at £100,000. Mines were flooded and farmhouses round Johannesburg demolished. Many persons were drowned.
