Wellington Harbour Works.
The reclamation work for which a contract has just been let by the llarbour Soard to Mr Joseph Sauilders will form the nucleus of a scheme of wharf extension of considerable magnitude. The retaining wall, when finished, will enclose a width of 250 feet outsida Waterloo-quay. The filling-in work, however, is not included in the present contract, but will be carried out by instalments, the first work to be done in this direction being sufficient only to give an approach to the wharf which it is proposed to construct. This wharf will be 120 feet in width and 460 feet in length* carrying two lines of rails on each side, divided off by fences, with a roadway and transit sheds in the centre. The outer line of rails will be spanned by specially-designed hydraulic cranes of great power, the bases of which will be arched, thus allowing the railway alii other traffic to pass underneath them. The cranes will be able to lift from a vessel's side into either the railway trucks or vehicles in the roadway. The wharf will afford accommodation for two ocean steamers, the necessary depth having already been secured by the dredging operations which have been proceeding during the whole of the winter. Mr Saunders' contract does not expire until the end of the present year, and it" is unlikely that the other parts of the scheme will be entered upon until the wall has been wholly completed. —Post.
