There is a great outbreak of small pox in Shanghai. The Emperor of China has been attacked, but la recovering, and the Heir- Apparent is ill. An accumulation of ice in the Ohio River is causing some distress, as supplies cannot be forwarded to districts along the banks. The authorities have ordered an attempt to be made to remove the obstruction by dynamite. Intense cold is being experienced in the United States. In Missouri the thermometer has been below zero for a month. A blizzard has devastated lowa, and many wrecks have taken place on the west coast. The trial of Dempsey, a labour leader, and Beatty and Davidson, in connection with the poisoning of free labourers at Carnegie's Homestead Works, is proceeding. The informer, Gallagher, a free labourer, deposed that Beatty engaged Davidson and himself to dose the free labourers, and that Dempsey applied for powder to use in a similar manner in connection with a street car strike at Chicago.
