The < hristian era commenced Ist January in th* middle of the 4th year of the 194 .h Olympiad, the 753rd year of the building of Borne, and in 4714 of the Julian period This era was invented by a monk, Dionyskn Exi^uus about 532. It was introduced into Italy in the 6th century, and ordered to be used by bishops by the cou icil of Chelsea in 816, but was not generally employed for several centuries. Charlts 111 of Germany was the first who added " in the year of our Lord " to h : s reign, in 879. It was formerly held that Christ was born Friday, sth April 4 B.C.
