That's the rub ! bat a travel round the shops will prove that our tradeis are not one whit behind larger towns in catering for this festive season of the year. Taking all, very great taste has been displayed in setting out the windows, and they are a picture and a credit to the town. Loveday Bros. This establishment has a very large assortment of novelties in drapery and clothing, many being suitable for Christmas presents. Being entirely a drapery department, their range of dress material is marvellous. They have a new stock of- corsets, gloves, hosiery, luces, ties, ribbons of all shades, all thegoods being from the bestmakers They also show a nice stock of shirts, singlets, collars, suits of clothes, so that people who viaifc this shop will have a good stock to select from. The Union Clothing and Mercery Company. Here we found the shop litsrally packed from floor to ceiling, with everything needful to make every father and son look their be<?t at this gay and festive season. This firm has a stock worthy of inspection of
what can be manufactured from our own grown wool at our different woollen mills, such as boy's, youth's and men's clothing, flannels, blankets, rugs, etc. The windows of this establishment -will be found full of suitable goods for presents to suit all ages from the child to the great grand -father. We noticed a stock of shirts just to hand, which seemed of a serviceable quality, and all marked at a low figure "New Times" Boot Shop. We noticed on going over Mr Startup's Christmas stock that he I has some very neat and pretty I things, in the shape of children's and ladies' boots and shoes, the price of which he assures us are very low. He likewise has just received for summer wear a consignment of Russian leather, and we were shown a pair of boots manufactured on the premises, which certainly looked well, and persons requiring something nice and easy should at once give their orders. " Old Times " Boot Shop. Mrs Harris is not behind the times, and has a nice stock of boots and shoes, including ladies' tann shoes just received. Thacker & Pallant's Boot Shop. This branch establishment, from the well-known firm above mentioned have an endless variety to select from, and they have also just re--ceived a very nice and serviceable consignment of ladies' and children's Boots and Shoes. The goods are all marked up in plain figures. J. Walls' Bakery. Mr Walls has edible and liquid refreshments, also Cadbury's Chocolates, Christmas cake?, bon-bons, Santa Clnus' stockings, sugar toys, and confectionery of all kinds. H. P. Forster's BakeryThis bakery a'so has a fine show of the different goods for the festive season, and on Christinas Eve a monster 'Xmas tree and bran pie will be on view. . The different items of confectionery kept by the proprietor arc too numerous to mention. Saddlers. Messrs W. Little and H. C. Lansdon are not behind the others in having a 'Xmas show on this occasion. -. •■■ •
