A Dastardly Act.

Monday's Manawatu 'Jinies has the following: — A brutal outrage was committed on Saturday evening on a horse belonging to Mr Leopold Simmons. The horse had been brought in from a paddock about five o'clock, and tied up to a tree at the rear of Mr Simmon's establishment in the Square. About an hour afterwards the horse was discovered with five wounds upon it three on the near, and one on the off side of the barrel, and one on the flank, three of them beins about four inches in length and fully as much in depth. The wounds had evidently been inflicted by some sharp instrument and by some person, but the wonder is how the horse allowed his assailant to iuflict such injuries, the one on the flank particularly. Messrs D. Pringle and D. B. Harris were called in, and succeeded in stopping the bleeding;, which was very profuse, and then dressed the wounds. Constables Watty and Quinn were quickly on the scene, and on searching the vicinity, found lying in the long grass a man named Charles Smith, whom they arrested on suspicion of having committed the outrage.

This morning before Mr W. Welch, J.P., Charles Smith was charged with maliciously maiming the horse referred to above, and on the application of Sergeant Blattery a remand was granted until to-morrow morning. He has since been committed for trial.
