Mr James Gordon Bennett, proprietor of the New York Herald,, will probably be appointed United states Minister in Paris. A convention, sitting at New Orleans, passed a resolution favouring the Nicaragua Ship Canal, on the ground that it would double trade, lessen the distance by sea between New York and San Francisco by 10,000 miles, and attract the Oriental trade. Jay Gould is dead. He died from pulmonary consumption after nine day's illness. He leaves a fortune of £34,000,000 sterling. It is expected that he has bequeathed from three to five million dollars to chari» ties. George Gould inherits 40 per cent of the estate. The entire American press refer to Gould's death with contemptuous pity, and are glad his sinister influence has ended. Wells, of Monte Carlo notoriety, has been arrested in Havre on a charge of obtaining the sum of £50, 000 from persons in London by means of fraudulent representation.
