Sad Suicide at Napier.
; A young man naixied WilKani -Edward Dalton, who was' managing the local branch of the Auckland tailoring firni of J. H. Daltdri antl Co., was found dead in his shop oh Wednesday, and the surrounding circumstances point to suicide. Dalton was an amateur: bookmaker, and it is presumed he was ' struck ' over the New Zealand Cup. A. bottle of prussic acid was found in his pockefc. At the inquest held on ' Thursday, Charles Goffia,.. foreman tailor, in the employ of the deceased, deposed to finding the body and sending for the police and doctor. The latter found upon his,arrival that the deceased had been djoad-foom 12 to 20 hours. The police -ttook from deceased's breast a loz perfumery bottle, containing nearly half an ounce of JSofceele's solutbn^pf prussic acid. The -post mortem* 'revealed sufficient signs of the pcaaori /to account for fully another half outfce. He left letters behind him attributing his suicide to failure in gambling speculations, and hoped that his death would be a warning to young men never to gamble. The event has caused quite a sensation here, as the deceased was one of several young men who. are beli&vejii to have .^ee^iq.jbhe habit of gambling; at a hpuse[\^ r % which has long been u^su^ejsjfully watched by the police. '-Tsy 'ift9ff^discovered how or where f( r 4e<j^a^ed obtained the poison . the chemists in the town n.ad^sold prussic acid for over a niontla, and none of them had sold to. the deceased at any time any pbison. The jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane. Deceased was 28 years of age, and a member of the well-known family of tailors of Auckland, Wellington,- and Napier. - •: .
