President » I*. Bartholomew, Plsq | Vice-president-, F. O-. Hoe ; Esq j Judge;?, Messrs 13. It. Gardener and "I). H. Mills: Ktarier; Mr. ■+. Rose! Handieapper; Mr Si. H. Ayre ; Referee, Mr A. Murray ; Treasurer, Mr j Jus; Mclntyre ; Secretary, Mr C. j Thompson ; Committee, Messrs W. W. Smithson, F. Newell, J. Pearse, 11. Ryder, Avnarangi, Hanita and Kingi. The above second annual gathering was held on the Recreation Ground yesterday (Prince of Wales' Birthday), and passed off even more successfully than its predecessor. The attendance was perhaps not so large as last year, — the Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Palmerstbn North, and sports at Petone no doubt keeping many away. The weather seemed threatening in the morning, but it kept fine until about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, when a couple of showers fell, but were only of a short duration, so did not interfere in any way with the success of the sports. The committee are to be complimented in getting the different events off to time, although several unforseen events had to be included. The secretary, Mr C. Thompson, was perhaps the hardest worked official on the ground, and the treasurer, Mr Jas. Mclntyre also had a lot to do. In the absence of the handicapper, Mr M. A. Ayre from the district, Mr B R. Gardener held that position, and we think gave every satisfaction to the competitors. Mr J. Rose made a very good starter, getting his men away on each occasion very quickly. The judges (Messrs B. R. Gardener and D. H. Mills) had several close finishes to witness, but their decisions were never doubted. The Foxton Brass Band played very nicely, which enlivened the proceedings to a great extent. A great number of ladies ness ot the sports. S. Rhodes' rungraced the course with their presence which helped to add to the attractivening in the Mile Handicap was quite a feature of the meeting, holding as he did almost the last position until the last lap when he came with a rush through his men, winning from Hanson by a yard or two. The running and jumping of A. W. Watts was also much admired, starting as he did from scratch in each event. The Maori halca, or war dance, proved to be another of the best items on the programme, the people crowding round the ring to get a glimpse of the 20 young natives taking part in ifc. Tuhera Kiriona, acted as the rangatira, or conductor, and made a very able one. Appended is the programme, with results : — 1. Maiden Race, 150yds.
