The Fifth of November.

.v .. . ♦ r— . . In these latter days it has so become the fashion to blow up your enemy and anyone else who happens to be present, that the above date now excites but little attention, the novelty has worn off. Still in 1605 there was much interest shown in an .. anonymous letter sent to Lord Monteagle, which contained this very enigmatical information "Though there be no appearance of any stir, yet I say they shall receive a terrible blow this, parliament, and yet they shall hot see who hurts them." This was the hint that Guy Faux * had everything ready to blow up parliament, and was sent to keep Lord Monteagle away from the danger. He however " smelt a rat " and placed his information in the hands of the leading detective of his time, which resulted in the prompt . arrest of Guy Faux in the cellars, under the House of Lords. Since 1825 these cellars have been turned into offices, but till lately it was the custom of the " Beef -eaters " to • perambulate all the underground portion of parliament house, to try and find another Guy Faux, but ' , fortunately without result It is ,'.. waste of time as dynamiters attach - ■ their explosive combinations on the outside of buildings and then run away. The cut but a sorry figure to old Guy Faux who though a mistaken fanatic was no coward and stuok by his powder prepared to receive the same elevation that his victims" would.
