The evidence shows that the . defendant, wife of AtaJ r-General Sniyth, accused her friend, the wife of Lieutenant Leader, of stealing and selling a diamond brooch. The Scotch express, travelling southwards, came into collision with a goods train at Manor House siding and all but two carriages were completely consumed by fire which broke Outi The accident occurred during a fog at 4 o'clock in the morning when the train was running a mile per minute. Over a hundred passengers were in the train. Several of these had booked for Australia by the steamer Oratava. Altogether thirteen persons were killed.
