Sporting Notes.
By E*bly-bird. The racecourse presents a lively appearance of a morning just now, no less than nine horses being in work. This proves the wise step the Committee took in adding to the programme a lace for local horses, as had it not been for the prospect of being able to start in a race where the " cracks '' are barred there would not have been the present number on the training track. The following is a list of the horses in work :— ■ Mr Puti Matene's Wairoa, by Natator, and a chestnut mare by The Premier ; Mr J. Ahern's bay mare by a Somnus colt from Mm. nette ; Mr P. Dudson's Elaine, by Na'ator— Fides. These four ara v trained by W. Fergus, who has lately hailed from the South Island. The horses are striding along well in their work and should win their oats if properly placed. ■ : Mr J. Purcell's cream filly by Tim Whiffler— Milksop is a very even'y made mare, with plenty of "' condition, and it should be no trouble for her to gallop. ■ v i , Mr F. R. Young's Somnus— Lady Ellen gelding is, I think,- the- best ~ bred horse on the track, and is a full/ brother to Fair Ellen, a mare that " Mr F. Bell took to Australia two years ago. He is a nice colt, but will be seen to more advantage the latter end of the season. Mr J. R. McMillan's Merton, Somnus — Gazelle gelding, is rather a plain horse. He appears' very ; forward, and is said to be a clever fencer. Mr W. Robinson's Beeswing, Remington— Milksop filly, it a big raking mare that will take time to furnish, and will not be seen. at her best this season. Mr C. Robinson's Dawn, Somnus ■ —Barmaid filly, is looking very big, and will require a lot of work to get her down She is a full brother to Waiter, who is performing success, fully in Australia.
