The Sheep Return.

The annual sheep returns for the year ended 30th April last are now to hand. The most satisfactory announcement is, that despite all the drains made on the flocks of the colony there has been an increase of 1,817,---000 since the year pre\ious. There are throughout the colony 8822 owners of sheep under 500; 2038 owning under 2000 ; 761 owning under under 5,000 ; 814 owning under 10,000 ; 281 owning under 20,000 ; and 176 owning over 20.00 CL The total number of sheep is 18,570,752, and consists of 2.600,884 male merino's and 4,266,777 males of other breeds, and 8,501,290 merino ewes and 8,203,8(1 ewes of other breeds. The return mentions that the number of breeding ewes of all classes is 6,117,015, whch, with the good percentage gained in lambing, which would be fair to take at more than fifty, shows how quickly the exports can be replaced. The Manawatu County is credited with 220,611 sheep as against 185,565 of last year, and the Horowhenua County has 107,312 sheep as against 85,516 of lost year. Morrison, 3050; Motoa Estate, 14,598 ; Oroua Downs, 10,699 ; Pascal Brothers, 2643 ; C. Pyke, 3185 ; J. B. Balston, 2965 ; .Robinson Brothers, 8000 ; F. Kobinson, 2050 ; Henry Sanson, 3500 ; Strang Brothers, 3921 ; W. Taylor, 2485 ; J. G. Wilson, 7550. The holders of over 2000 sheep in the Horowhenua County are :—Walter Best, 2287 ; Davies and Stewart, 11,500 ; J. Death, 2190 ; A. Drake, 2300 ; John Kebbell, 4692 ; J. E. McDonald, 6000; W. H. Simcox, 8760; Tamati Eanapira, 2579; James Waugh, 7954. _•
