We are sorry to learn that Mr W. S. Stewart, head master of the State School, has been laid aside from work for the last three days by an attack of acute laryngitis. He is now recovering and hopes to resume his duties to-morrow. During his absence the work of his special classes hag been carried on by Mr W. Stansell, the male assistant, very smoothly A complete set of Croquet, the best
obtainable in the colony, -was ordered from Mr Rush (of Pegden & 00.,* Palmerston), on Saturday last for the special use 1 of the girls attending the Foxton school. The boys have already a fairly good supply of cricketing material both for the senior and junior clubs. "It never rains hut it pours," however. On Tuesday afternoon Mr Lord (of Lord & Letfis, of artesian well fame), called at the school and most generously presented the senior club With two first-class spring bats, bails atid Wickets, and a Duke's match ball Not satisfied with this Very generous gift, Mr Lord expressed his intention to bestow prizes amounting td Hot less than £2 for the special benefit of the girls, suggesting in default of any better idea presenting itself that this amount might be allocate*** to the encouragement of sewing in the several standards. At the close ot this pleasing interlude the master in charge, Mr Stansell called for Three Cheers for Mr Lord and and these were given by the boys with hearty good-will. By the kindly interest thus evinced in our local school affairs Mr Lord has earned the cordial thanks and good wishes not only of the children and teachers, but of the school committee and the towns folk generally.
