News from Western Africa states that 4000 of King Dahomey's troops attacked the French forces at Dogba, losing 1000 killed. The French loss was only 6 killed, including two officers, and 10 wounded, although the natives fought desperately for several hours. A large quantity of gold coin and antique Roman vessels have been unearthed at Oraova, a town on an island in the Danube. Both Austria and Servia claim the ownership, though the town forms part of Servia. The Hoa Mr Blake, M.P., was feted by the citizens of Toronto, whither he has temporarily returned and presented with an address congratulating him on his election for an Irish constituency. In replying he denied that the Home Rulers aimed at ultimate separation from Great Britain. The Russian Government has prohibited the Jews from giving their children Christian names. A conflict has occurred in Kansas between negroes and whites, in which nine of the former were killed. They were lead by a member of the • People's Party.' Russia has called the Sultan's attention to the serious results which may follow if the relations between Turkey and Bulgaria become contrary to existing treaties. The message has created a sensation in the city. The French President has pardoned Mr Edward Deacon, the American, who shot is wife's paramour, a Frenchman named Abeille, and was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. By a fire at Rockaway Beach, a fashionable watering place 20 miles south of New York city, 100 buildings were destroyed, including many of the hotels. Several lives were lost, and the damage to property is estimated at half a million dollars.
