Mount Etna is again in eruption.
General Yanoff, in a report to the Ameer, complains that the Afghans refused to treat him amicably, but opened fire on his expedition. The Ameer is appealing for English aid against Russian intrusion. General Yanoff's expedition numbers 2000 men, with 12 guns, and a position has been taken up at Alichur. Another Russian force is stationed at Kalawanj, on the bank on the river Oxus. The Ameer of Afghanistan has informed the Viceroy of India that the fighting which has recently occurred in the Pamirs is the result of Russian aggression, Three thousand Russians are encamped at Somatash. Intelligence is to hand that Frecnh warships are bombarding Whydah and other ports in Dahomey. French troops have left Porto Novo, and gone in the direction of Abomey, but they await the arrival of reinforcements before making an attack on the King's stronghold. The Frenoh troops have occupied Takoa, Dahomey, with but small loss, and the Dahomeyans have now evacuated the district. The Khost tribe have broken out in revolt against the Ameer. Reinforcements sent by Russia en route to the Pamirs, have passed through Tashkand. The Chinese Minister in Berlin has been instructed to proceed to St Petersburg to demand the recall of General Yanoff s expedition. ' The death rate in Russia from cholera continues to be about 800 daily. Hawaii claims Cornwallis Island which was recently reported to have beeu annexed by H.M.S. Champion on behalf of Great Britain, and alleges that the Government never transferred part of Pearl Harbour to a Foreign Power. The Washington Government deny Hawaii's claims to Cornwallis Island, and assert they never owned it.
