Co-operation.
"V On Saturday we issued as an inset
a circular from Messrs Joseph Nathan & Co., intimating their intention of forming a company on Co-operative principles to take over and carry on their business at the Ready Money St<s6 at Palmerston.
Co operation' is the growing principle of the age and reference has only to be made to the huge " Civil Service" and .," Army and Navy " Stores at Home to prove our assertion. Nearer to our homes wo have the instance of what has been done in the Wairarapa where the businesses of. Messrs Caselberg at Masterton, and J. Nathan & Co., at Tinni, ".' have been successfully amalgamated as the • Wairarapa Farmer's Co-operative Association. It is in consequence of the success of this latest association that Messrs J. Nathan & <"0., have decided to offer the public a share in their Palmerston business, The advantages of such a proceeding is shown by the public stepping at once into a large and flourishing business managed by men who have been carefully trained, and who. are consequently well competent to do for the shareholders what they have done' for the firm. The shareholders will derive advantages by getting first, • a fair interest upon their -'capital, and a bonus on all purchases, the .. shipment of their product ttf the best markets at the cheapest' rates, as from the business transacted, the Association will be enabled to make, direct charters with large vessels. . With the large connection suoh an Association would secure in the London market, owing to the volume ot its purchases and sales, money would be obtainable at low -rates, and a special feature is to be made of this so that money may be tpaned to shareholders at an advance on English rates sufficient to cover incidental 'expenses, Messes .J; Nathan & Co., have been long established as Merohants in Wellington,' and as it is promised £hat the .firm will retain a large amount of capital in the Association, and that some members of the firm will remain in the company, shareholders will understand ,that they will be well cared for until they feel themselves strong enough to run alone. It also shows that the firm have -every confidence in the proposal they propose placing before the public* There have been many expressions by farmers to have a co-oiferative store of their own, and to ife|^ivh6 think so we should say th_tHiis i proposal seems the readiest' and safest way of making the trial. Such undertakings, have proved eminently" successful ih the South - Island, andY under proper manageme_it.«houl- prove so in this island. Wh^nthe .Stock Lists have been completed,, the Prospectus and Memorandum of Association will he issued.
The beat in Germany is so great that the crops, fruit, and vegetables have been destroyed in. some, districts, ■ At .A 1 tona, which is a filthy town, men are dying in the streets.
