Before the victorious general interfered with hira he had several hun> dred wives, but when made a prisoner no one had sufficient courage to take charge of the harem, and Cetewayo was sent into captivity with only three. Poor old fellow, what a reduction, and he felfc it so* Lord Wolseley tells the story, so we must believe it, that when he was on the point of returning to England, Cetewayo sent him a message to the effect that, •' if I would not give hira any more wives, would I exohange the three he had for three others."
