Cruelty to a Child.
« In the Masterfcon Wesidsnt Magistrate's Court on Wednesday Thomas and Elizabeth Goodgame, of Mauricevillc, were charged with illegally treating a girl named Maud Thompson., 15 years of age, the daughter of the latter. '1 he evidence adduced showed that the child had been shockingly treated. Dr Hosking, who had examined her, stated that «b> was ono mass of bruises . from bead to foot. The child herseH stated in evidence that she had b^'en compelled to sleep on the bare boards night after night ; had been made to walk out on a frosty morning to a creek some distance from the house without a vestige of clothing upon her, and had actually had a certain vessel emptied over her head, and been made to swallow a portion of the contents* Accused admitted having made the girl sleep . on. the floor, and having thrashed her with a piece of wood, but denied having adopted unnecessary measures to keep the child iri subjection. The case was just about concluded when the female accused went off in a , swoon; and 'j.n adjournment was then made uritii Monday.
