We are exceedingly pleased to be able to announce that through the representations of Mr J. G. : . Wilsan, the goyernmenibaye agreed to. give . a bonus for improved flax machinery. It is impossible to predict what may be. the outcome of such an offer, but that it is wise to do so seems , so beyond .question- that .the. delay is more astounding' than : the act. However :. as we are always- thankful for ; -all. mercies, - so we are for this, and gladly applaud the government for acceeding, if late;, to our Membei'3 constant.representations. The Minister ofi Lands, and Mr J. G. Wilson are busy getting -.proper, .^cifidtations drawn -oiif, -arid ; we '■ iriay - look' for their soon being gazetted.

. The ; statement that & bonus wouldbe offered has been made so often that .weTieSrnej&fy irusff nofihihg will be- pWmitted-to •prevent' its being carried out, as we hold the industry, which employs so much manual labour, would be a distinct gainer, and thus would the colony at large. We are assured that directly, the bonus is gazetted there will be a number of applicants for it, men who have devoted long periods to the improvement of the machinery,' and, may be, aotne wholly novel proposals to arrive at the same result as stripping, but by simpler and oheaper \ means, The specifications will probably be modelled upon, the suggestions made' by practical hemp-millers ( to. the previous govesnment.
