Cheap Newspaper Postage

An important alteration in the postage rates of newspapers beyond the colony comes into force on June 10. The present rates for the United Kingdom and Australian colonies are Id per newspaper, and Id per four ounces, and id fer every additional 2 ounces for other countries without restriction as to weight. These rates, however, are not in accord with the Postal Union regulations, which require that either M per 2 ounces, or Id per 4 ounces be levied. The Imperial Post Office has lately adopted the minimum rate of £d per 2 ounces for newspapers for Australian colonies io place of the Id per 4 ounce rate, and urged that the colonies should agree to a like rate. As the colony must accept one or the other of the Union rates, it was decided to adopt the minimum aate of £d per 2 ouncas for papers for all places beyond the colony as being more liberal to the public. . Ihe inland rate of |d per newspaper, irrespective of weight, is of course, not altered. Amendments on the side of liberality in connection with the transmission of commercial and printed papers are also to be made. — Press.
