Foxton Borough Council.

» The usual mouthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Library buildings yesterday at 2 p.m. Present— The Mayor (G. Nye), Crs Williams, Ahem, McMillan, Austin, Startup and Stansell. The minutes of the previous meetiny were read and confirmed. Tha following correspondence was read : — | INWARDS. Horowhenua County Council, asking for further particulars of ferry account. Land and Income Tax Department, sending copy of affidavit to be made for subsidies and calling attention to the necessity of a 2s 6d stamp being affixed to the document. Constable Gillespie, asking for his

duties as Inspector of Nuisances to be more particularly defined. E, S. Bourke applied for a license as nightman. The reports by the ranger and poundkeeper were laid on the table. The public works committee made the following report :— Gentlemen^Since our last monthly meeting your committee have visited and selected site for riightsoil depot and fixed pegs for boundaries of sanle. We have also opened tenders for erecting fence and tool-shed and removing and re-erecting urinal, and have accepted the tender of T. Easton for £7 7s 6d ; the following tenders wei ; c also received i— A. MusgroVe, £8 5s ; Jonson & Trask, £10. « Cr Williams drew attention" that tenders for this work should have been advertised. Two'- carpenters had complained that they had no notification of the work. The Clerk said that he had asked all the carpenters that he knew of. Cr Ahem said the matter was noii satisfactory. It was not fair to those who were not asked. Cr McMillan thought it was the Councillors who objected to the advertising were to blame more than the Clerk was. Cr Startup supposed Councillor* meant him. He had suggested that small tenders, should -be called by notices on a blackboard; or placed in shop windows. He thqughtso far as these tenders were concerned the work had been done cheap. v The Mayor had understood that the local men about town were to be asked to tender. Many years' 'ago the plan mentioned by Cr Startup had been tried but it had not given satisfaction. Cr Williams said-; it was: penny wise and pound foolish not kMadvertise and the Council had always gained by calling for tenders in r the newspaper. , ; ;.•;-. ...;?,...•"■. Cr McMillan thought the proposal pf .Gr Startup very mean, to ask. the storekeepers to do their advertising on the cheap. The following accounts were passed for payment : — T. Newth, £1 ; N.Z. McLean £1 Us; Jonson & Trask, £27; Gerbes, £2 18 ; T. Easton, £7 7s 8d; Public Account N.Z., £2 18s 4d; W. L. Coe, £4 3s 4d; B. Spelman, £2 18s 4d ; Dr Dermer, £6 ; Library Aceonnts, B. Spelman, £3 12s; H.Blake, £l 10s. The following resolutions were passed : — - .-"■;• Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by the Mayor, That T. Ennis be allowed to erect two aign posts aocording to the by-laws. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr Ahem, That the future meetings of the Council be held at 7 p.m. Cr Williams said he had brought it forward as it was thought it would be more convenient to the majority. - The Mayor said if the motion was carried he must resign, as his health l did not allow him to be out late, Jf it was not for that he would have been glad to have met the Council* lors. • Cr Williams said with the consent of the seconder be would' withdraw the motion as he was unaware it would be inconvenient to his worM ship. The motion was withdrawn. Proposed by Cr McMillan, ge* conded by Ci: Stansell, That a special meeting of this Council be held for the purpose of defining the duties of Inspector of Nuisances. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Williams, That the Inspector of works report at next council meeting the roads and the area that are not in use for public traffic and that tenders be called for letting said roads at the next meeting of the council-. The Mayor said that people we*e occupying portions of streets and he thought the Council should establish their claim in the interests 1,, 0 f the ratepayer. : ; r Proposed by Cr Williams, ; ..se. conded by the Mayor, That the , following streets Nos 1,. 2, & 8, be named as follows :— Jenk's street, Howan street, and Baker street.
