London.
The leaders of parties in the general election say the campaign is now in full swing. Mr Chamberlain in his speech at Birmingham, expressed himself sanguine with regard to the reported organising in Ulster that it would result in the biggest convention ever seen in the United Kingdom. At a meeting of the Anti- Slavery Society, a memorial was prepared to be presented to Lord Salisbury expressing dismay at Mr Samuel Griffith's reversal of his former humane decision against the Kanaka traffic. The Society considered that every effort to regulate the trade had failed" and so urge Lord Salisbury to withhold his sanction as any continuance of Kanaka labour in Queensland would meet a similar fate. The new Oriental Bank Corporation suspended payment at 6 o'clock on Wednesday. The immediate cause of the suspension is that the institution has three-quarters of a million pounds locked up in landed property in Melbourne, and half a million in land in Mauritius. The liabilities amount to 7£ mili lions sterling, exclusive of the
paid-up capital. The directors hope to be able to pay debts in full, and resuscitate the affairs of the. Bank if the depositors accept 5 per cent preference shares.
