The Hospital Ball.
A public ball was held in Palmer-' ston on Tuesday evening in aid of the funds of the Hospital. The attendance was not large, bnt the supper was. At any rate the reports of the two local papers leads us to suppose so, as in the Times' report of the ball one third of the space, and in the Standai d's report, one half of the space is devoted to the supper. Evidently they had a high old time making others wish they had been there. The. Times, probably repre 1 sented by a gentleman well known in this town, says: — "The supper of a superb character, the music first-class, and the convenience generally excellent. Of the supper, too, much cannot be said ; everybody was most agreeably surprised at its really splendid character ; indeed, it would have borne more than favourable comparison with the spread of a first-class banquet. The ladies who supplied the viands are deserving of every praise for the evidently great trouble and expense they wen f 4 to in supplying the eatables. While the scene in the. ball-room was indeed a brilliant one, when dancing was in full swing and the 100 couples present were tripping the light fantastic the supper-room presented an exceedingly bright and attractive appearance during the supper adjournment." The Standard writes thus : — " During the day supplies for the supper poured in from all parts of the district, and the result of the committee's exertions in this direction was tha,t one of the most delightful collations it is possible to imagine was laid out, the taste displayed in decorating the tables serving to bring into relief the many choice morsels provided." 'I he love of good things seem to be universal with the Press and not confined to one particular member of it,, as it has been at times suggested. We are real glad they so enjoyed themselves.
