An Embanking Machine.

Mr Suisted, of Earori, has supplied us with some information concerning a machine which his brother-in-law, Mr Eobt. Donald, of the Wairau, has just imported from America for the purpose of comtructing embankments oh the low-lying portions of his property. The appliance, which has c^st nearly £500, was made by' the^ Austin Manufacturing Company in Chicago, and was put together by Mr Morenus, one of their employees, who is now on his way to Australia and South Africa for the purpose of fitjjing up similar machines in those countries. Twelve horses and three men are required to work it, and in ten hours it is able, to lift 1000 and 1500 yards of stuff. The tremendous quantity of earth which- the elevator lifted at the first trial quite astonished all the spectators, and Mr Donald at once took the machine off the expert's hands, being in every way satisfied with its capabilities. Thousands of acres of land in the Marlborough district which are at present only used for grazing purposes, because of frequent floods, can now, with the aid of the Austin Company's machines,, be protected at small cost. Ban It 8 of a substantial character can,, we are assured, be erected at less than onethird the cost of manual labour. —Post.
