» " '" ■ On Wednesday evening the rain commenced to fall in light showers and continued through the night and up till mid day on Thursday making the ground damp and miserable In the afternoon, however, the weather abated and a fair number of spectators collected on the bank. On the whole the racing was. good and some very close finishes were seen the outrigger races were not very close ones, all of them being practically over at the shed. The water^^ sports caused a great deal of amuse-^i ment, especially the tub and sea horse races. Owing to the small number of entries the Greasy Pole and Horse did not come off. The Hon Secretary" bad plenty to do, and worked hard all the day, and wag supported by th» various offioo

Messrs Stewart andßhodes H had in one or two instances very / close finishes to decide, but their decisions met with general approval Mr De Bidder as judge of the water Sports fulfilled his duties of the satisfaction of the public. Mr Fume acted as starter for the water sports " and Mr Ingram as starter for the rowing races, and both were not to be beaten. The Committee all did their level best 'to secure the success, of the regatta. The Foxton Band added greatly to the enjoyment by playing during the intervals. Attached are the results : — 1. Final Heat, Sculling Handicap — Hunter's Cup. 10.30 a.m. Murray Thompson v A. Langley, 5 sees. This was a splendid race to the buoy but on rounding, Thompson got a lead which he maintained and won by 4 lengths. 2. Double Sculls (Outrigged Championship). Distance, \\ miles. ' Ist Prize, 2 silver medals, value £8; 2nd Prize, 2 pair boating shoes, value £1. 11 a.m. Entrance, 2s each crew. This race li&d to be postponed owing to the non-arrival of the sculls. 4, Pair-oared Inrigged Handicap — Open to all comers. Distance, \\ miles. Ist Prize, 2 medals, value £8 ; 2nd Prize, 2 silver gilt lockets, value £1 ss. Entrance, 2s each crew. 11.80 a.m. . There were only three entries for this race which resulted as follows : Edwards and Robinson, Queen of the South, 12^ sees . . 1 1 Shadbolt and Cook, Nikau, sen 2 5, Pair-oared Outrigged Championship. — Distance, 2 miles. Ist Prize, 2 silver Cups, value £0 ; 2nd Prize, 2 medals, value £2 10s. Entrance, 2s each crew. 12.80 'p.m. Four crews entered for this event •which was rowed in heats. Ist heat — Shadbolt and Nye beat C. and J. Symons. 2nd heat — Langley Bros beat Potter and Cowles* In the final heat Shadbolt and Nye won as they liked and now hold the position of tho champion pair of the river. 6. Tub Race— lst Prize, Greenstone and silver locket. Entrance, free. Start 12.45 p.m. Four entries. Martin, 1 ; Eore Heta, 2. 7. Canoe Race (Maori v. Pakeha). — Distance, 1 mile. Ist Prize, 1001 b flour ; 2nd prize, 501 b y fjoer. Entrance, free. 1 p.m. J Three oanoes entered. This was a very good' race, the canoes keeping well together down to the buoy.. On . the run back McGregor's crew forged • ahead and won rather easily, Piaka's crew being second. v. 8. Sea Horse Race — Ist Prize, Greenstone and silver whistle. Entrance, free. 1.15 p.m. The horses became rather lively during the race and caused much excitement by getting rid of their riders. R. Perreau, 1 ; J. Lee, 2. 9. Pair-oared Inrigged Handicap. Open to all comers. Distance, l| miles. Ist Prize, 2 medals, value £8 ; 2nd Prize, 2 silver mounted Briars, value £1 10s. Entrance, 2s each crew. 2 p.m. Edwards and Robinson, Queen of ' the South, sor 1 O. and D. Gardner, Douglas, 60 sees 2 G. and A. Langley, Rata, scr ... 3 There were six orewa for this event, the finish being very exciting, the first boat beating the seoond on the post. 10. Tub Race. —lst Prize, silver locket. 2.15 p.m. This race was won easily by Arthur Symons, Martin second and and Heta third. 11. Sea Horse Race — Ist Prize, 10s. There were five entries for this event which resulted as follows: F. Short, 1; W. Perreau, 2; H. Williams, 8. 12. Sculling Handicap.— Open to all comers. Distance, one mile. Ist Prize, Gold Sleeve Links, presented by J. L. Oliver, Esq. ; 2nd Prize, Hat to fit. Entrance, Is. 8 p.m. Imrie, Nikau, scr * Thompson, Douglas 50 sees ... * Edwards, Minnie, 50 sees . . 8 This race will be settled by the Committee during the week. 18. Pair-oared Inrigged Handicap. Open to all comers. Distance, 1\ miles. Ist Prize, 2 medals, value £3 ; 2nd prize, 2 silver sovereign purses, value £1 15s. ♦ Entrance,2s each crew 3.30 p.m. O. and D. Gardner, Douglas 70 sees 1 Potter and Cowles, Nikau, 15 sees 2 C and J.
