Hammond, G. Hirst, and R. Perrett. The annual tryst of the above club took place on Thursday (St. Patrick's Day.) The attendance was moderate, the very inclement weather no doubt preventing many visitors from attending. A brass band was in attendance and discoursed sweet music during the day. The racing on the whole was poor. •The courge was very slippery, consequently a few of horses, and jockeys came to grief. The officials all worked hard to make the meeting a success, and horseowners and visitors had no cause for complaint. The Trial Hurdles produced the largest field of the day, 18 weighing out, the winner turning up in a big grey gelding named Pat, who paid his backers the nice little div. of £80 17s. In the Maiden another good field mustered, 13 horses being placed in charge of the starter, who was not very long in despatching them on their journey, the winder turning up in Traitress, a nice grey mare by Traitor out of Little Scrub's dam. The race of the day— the Sandon Handicap — was a one horse race all the way, Drome* dary, a Wairarapa representative, winning all the way. Glenelg proved himself a sterling good horse by appropriating the Hurdles and Tramway Handicap. The Forced Handicap wound up the day's sport, and resulted in a good set to between Rangipuhi and Nat, the former just getting home by a neck. The following are the results : — Flying Stakes Handicap, of 50 soys ; second horse to receive 10 eovs from the stakes ; distance, fof a mile. Nomination, 1 soy ; ac eptance, 1 soy. To start at 12 o'cl- ck. Mr T. Bennett's Priscilla 7st . . 1 Mr R. Thurston's Niobe 7st 91b 2 Dingo and Poinsetta also started. Siriua, White Rose, Ben Bolt, Nimrod and angipuhi were scratched. The starter had a lot of trouble to despatch the quartette on even terms, all the boys trying to get their mounts off the mark first. Priscilla was quickest, on her legs when the flag, went down, closely followed by Dingo and Poinsettia, Niobe being very slow to move. When half a mile had been traversed Dingo and Poinsettia fell, leaving Priacilla to canter home. Niobe being a hundred yards away second. Dividend, £4 9s. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 80 soys ; second horse to re ceive 5 soys from the stake ; distance, 1£ miles ; over seven fights of hurdles 3ft 6in high. Nomination, 10^; acceptance, 20s. Nat led for a mile and a half at a good pace when he was joined by Glenelg, the other two being hopelessly beaten. The two former rose together over the last fence, and the issue was never in doubt when they both safely landed, Glenelg winning by half a length with a " bit up his sleeve," Roger a bad third, and Ridge pulling up. Dividend, £1 123. Trial Hurdles, of 15 soys ; distance, 1 mile ; weight nnt less than 10 stone ; for horses thit have never , w n any hurdle race, entrance, 15s. To start at 1.15. This was a splendid race all the horses jumping well with the exception of two There were a great many changes of positions during the race, and when they entered the straight it was difficult to spot the winner. Fifty yards from home three of them singled out from the ruok, and after, a desperate struggle ■pafgot home by half » length »mid '
great excitement. Dividend, £80 17b. Sandon Handicap, of 70 soys ; di«tance, 1£ miles; second horse to receive 10 eovs from the stakes. Nomination, 1 soy ; acceptance, 2 soys. To start at 2.15. Mr S. The' race needs little description. As soon as the flag fell Dromedary was rushed away at a great pace, followed by Rangipuhi and Dingo, who were evidently watching each othert Passing the stand the first time Dromedary was leading by about a diatance.and his riderintended to increase it if possibe, riding his mount very hard. Half a mile frdm home Rangipuhi left Dingo and started in pursuit of the Wairarapa horse and was catching him at .every stride, Dingo never appearing to make, a forward movement. Entering the straight Dromedary had an advantage of three lengths, which lie maintained to the finish, Rangipuhi having shot his bolt trying to catch him. Dingo was a long way behind third. Bangihau, Rabelais, Lady Clare and Whakahi were scratched. The flag fell to a very good start the whole of the thirteen horses being in a bunch for about 100 yaids, when they began to single out. Traitress and Omahu had then a slight advantage which they maintained all the way, Traitress gaining the judge's verdict by half a length. Dividend, £3 6s. Tbamway Handicap, of 25 soys; distance, 1 mile, Nomination, 10s ; acceptance, 10s. To start at 4.10. Mr F. Koberts' Glenelg 7.2 ..1 Mr Reupena Ngarino's Otakipo 6.7 ... ... ...2 Mr T. Along the back of the course Glenelg was eased a bit, and Otakipo and Poinsettia were booming along at a merry pace. Kntering the straight Glenelg's head was let go and he went to the front, nothing in the race being able to race him a yard home, Otakipo a moderate second, Poinsettia third, PrisciUa fourth, and Waitress last.
