The Mokau Coal Company.
* — Sometime ago a co-operalive worlringmen's company for the hewing of coal from a mine situated at Mokau was formed in Wellington. Many persons with a little capital joined as also some miners who took 995 miners' shares. Amongst the directors, in fact the chairman, was the departed A. W. Brown. The Secretary convened a meeting on Friday night, at which 40 shareholders attended, and A. W. Brown came in for many hard words. Of course Brown had no business to leave, but it would have taken a, better man than him to have made? the company pay. It appears that, 431 tons have been landed by thesteamer Rowena. at a total cost of." £700, and that this took four months,, and resulted in a loss of £429. No, lease had been signed for the mine, and apparently the miners had not been paid and one shareholder feelingly remarked that the conduct of the miners suing for wages when they knew the Company had no money to pay them with, was not as it ought to have been. From the very start the only obstacle, according to a shareholder, was the Wiint of capital ! yet we hear of so niui'h of this grease to the wheels of industry being locked up in the banks. It was finally decided to wind the company up. :,
