Borough Council.

+_ The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Library buildings yesterday afternoon. * Present— Crs Nye, Williams, McMillan, Austin and Hillary. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr Nye took the chair. The minutes of the last meetings were read aud confirmed. After the minutes had been read Cr Wilson arrived and Cr Nye vacated the chair. . The following tenders for lamp--lighting nnd collecting dog-tax were opened : — P. Guerin, for lighting, £35 a year. This was the only tender. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by the Mayor pro forma, That P. Guerin's tender for collecting dog tax be accepted. The resolution was not carried. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That P. Guerin's tender for lamp lighting for the year 1892 be accepted, the price being £35. Cr Williams objected to the motion he thought the Council was not acting well, as in the last resolution they cut the price down when more running about had to be done. . The resolution on being put was carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded 'by Cr Hillary, That the collecting of the dog tax be left in the hands of the clerk to arrange for the sum not to -exceed Is per dog. the same to be ratified or otherwise by tho next meeting ofthe Council. Mr P. Guerin being the only tender in answer to advertisement to be given the preference. The Council divided, the ayes being Cr Hillary and the Mayor, and the noes being Crs Austin, McMillan, Nye and Williams. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr McMillan, That the dog tax for the year 1892 be 5s per dog. Cr Williams would like to see the tax made 2s 6d per head. The Mayor said the curs about town were a pest, and that 5s a dog was a reasonable tax. Cr McMillan thought any man with a dog would willingly pay 5s for one. Resolution carried. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr McMillan, That fresh tenders be called for collecting the dog tax. Tenders to be in by the 16th instant. The following accounts were passed for payment: — J. Sullivan, £6 5s ; C. Spring, £8 5s ; Blake, £1 10s ; Files 14s ; T. Gibson, £6 ss ; R. H. Barber, £1 9s 6d ; A, Jonson, £5 ;S. G. Bourke, 4s ; J. Anderson, £32 : Charitable Aid, Johnson, 12s ; Mrs Carrol, 255. Cr McMillan said as this Was the last time that his worship the Mayor would sit he desired to propose, That a vote of thanks be accorded the Mayor, Mr T. Wilson, for the manner in which he has conducted the business of the Council during the past year. Cr Nye seconded. Cr Williams desired to say on behalf of the gentleman who signed the requisition asking Mr Wilson to stand, that at first he was very diffident about taking the position, buton being assured that it was his duty, he admitted that put another view, and he consented. He desired to thank Mr Wilson for the very nice manner which he had carried out his duties. The resolution was put and caried unanimously. The Mayor thanked the Council very much for the vote,, and he thanked Councillors very much for the assistance they had rendered. Everything had been done in a pleasant and conciliatory manner. He thanked the Council and burgesses for having placed him in this position of honour, a position he should always look back to with pleasure. He desired to congratulate the Mayor elect on his election to the office, and thought a very good choice had been made.
