Raising the Wind.
What a topsy-turvey country this Colony is to be sure, With one hand ' the Government encourage Schools of Art, and with the other hand desire to make lite miserable to the eye. To raise a few pounds in revenue, the Government are prepared to make the poles upon which their telegraph lines run, hideous, even more than they now are, by letting the right to advertise upon them. Fancy the horrible inharmonious colours these poles may be plastered with ! It is a wicked invention of the evil one, and a direct violation of the rights of the inhabitants. The Government had a right to place poles in the ground, by an Act •of Parliament, ' for the purpose of carrying their wires, but we. question very much if they have the c i;|ghsi6 : Tnake these 'poles public 'advertising hoardings, < to- the utter disfigurement of the property , of the townspeople. They might as well claim the right to let the advertising on the suits 'the people wear. We trust some very strong objections will be heard on this proposal, and thafc it will be numbered with others of fa similar ntitnre that this economical (?) Government have abandoned, If the Government believe in the urgent necessity of raising the wind, let them pat themselves between " sandwich " boards, which should realise as much as all the poles belonging to the Telegraph Department, for they do a wonderful lot of travelling about The Premier, " in boards," 'would "fetch" the audience at all the meetings «v his stumping tour-s, and 'his -adve'rMgfement . alone would -be worth money.
