New Zealand Hemp.
« The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report under date London, 3rd October: Since the date of our last issue the market for this fibre has been dull and declining, in sympathy with Manila and sisal. These latter, owing to their greatly increased production, sell at steadily decliuing prices. The value of Manila is now £30 10s per ton on the spot, and £30 per ton, c.i.f , for fair current to arrive. Sisal is worth £22 per ton, ex quay, Liverpool. It speaks well for the position now occupied by the New Zealand product that, in view of the serious drop which has taken place during the past six months in other descriptions, its value has been so well sustained. At the four public auctions held during the month about 2,500 bales have been offered, and 1120 bales sold under the hammer. There is no change in the value of the fine qualities, but fair medium must be quoted quite 10s per ton lower. We quote : superior soft, bright hemp, £28 10s to £25 per ton ; good medium, well dressed, £22 10s to £23; fair to medium, £21 to £22 ; fair to medium, slightly strawy, £19 10s to £20 10s ; common, coarse and strawy, £18 to £19 ; hackled tow, £16 to £18 ; tow, £5 10s to £6 10s.
