Military Tournament.

At the military tournament held on the Hutt Park racecourse on Saturday and Monday last, the members of the Rangitikei Cavalry managed to score the following wins as reported by &c N.JS. Times :— Pursuing Practice.— Open to squads of foov men. Prizes, Ist, £6 ; 2nd, jea ; Brd, t'l 10s. Results— Waiuku Cavalry (Lieutenant Carrie, Troopers Currie, Macdonald, and ■Mellsop), 1 ; Heretaunga Mounted j B.^fies (Sergeant Silver, Corporals Welsh and Tocker, Trooper Fox), 2 ; Rangitikei Cavalry (Captain Mackenzie, Trumpeter Walker, Troopers Costali and Mitchell), S. Tho Rangitikei Cavalry were weakened by the prevailing influenza ; several of their number had to stay away, and the competitors were simply scratch teams, so that they can scarcely be said to have had a fair show. Heads and Posts, about 150 yds, with a Bft jump ; time allowed, 25 seconds.— Prizes : £2, £1, and 10s — -"vs several competitors tied, the Awards were, by agreement, divided as follows : —Captain Mackenzie, .Rangitikei Cavalry, and Sergeant ttilva, of the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles, Ist and 2nd prizes ; the Brd prize being divided amongst Sergeant Death and Corporal Thorpe, of the Wairoa Cavalry, and Lieutenant Pringle, of the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles. Thirty entries. TSarebacked Umbrella and Cigar Race. - Each competitor to have an umbrella, cigar and matches. On the signal to start, light cigars, open umbrellas, mount, and race round the track. First man wins provided he has carried his umbrella open during the race, and his cigar is burning on arrival at winning post. No whips or spurs, parasols, or saddles allowed. Prizes— £1, 10s, ss. The race proved very amusing, and resulted as follows : Trooper McDonnell, Rangitikei Cavalry, 1 ; Trooper Campbell, Heretaunga Mounted Rifles, 2. No third prize was awarded, no other competitors fulfilling the conditions.
