A.M. P. Society

Ths Resident Secretary of the Australian Mutual Provident Society at Wellington has forwarded us the report on the Mortality experience of the Society from 1849 to 1888. The report is prepared by the Society's actuary Richard Teece, a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, and the General Manager of the A.M.P. The report is a most able one, but bristling as it does with figures, it hardly lends itself to reduction, and is much too long for reproduction. '-■ The Society has deposited with the local agent copies for members; -when they can see what a grand prospect their Society has. The report "shows, without doubt, that the expectation of life, is to the advantage of the Australian Office.

The table of contents give, the introductory report, the data, the construction of the tables, the Expectation of life, the actual and expected deaths, the effect of selection, diseased lives, influence of the sum assured on the rate of mortality.

There are nine diagrams showing, probability of dying in a year at each age, comparison of number living at each age, comparison of expectation cf life, comparison showing percentage of actual deaths and of tho expected deaths by various tables, and comparisons of probability of dying in a year at each ago.

The report is printed on thick paper, with clear type, and is, as is usual with the publications of this Society, got up in a first cla3s manner. 1 he veal interest to members lies in its proving the very favourable way in which facts have been proved, n s regards the longevity of the members have exceeded the expectations, and how much better the funds have been invested, than provided for, and again how the expenses of management have been under the usual percentage. To professional actuaries the report is bound to be a work of reference, and they owe the Society thanks for placing so much valuable information within their reach, in such a oomptvet fovm.
