The earthquake shock in Japan travelled from east to west, and was felt throughout the entire island. At the Crown port of Nazmaya 2000 persons were killed, 18,000 houses levelled to the ground. At Gifutown five of the inhabitants were killed.
In many of the towns the houses caught fire. The panic was universal, and those who were injured were left to perish, hundreds dying of exposure and starvation.
The Chilian Government assert that the inquiry into the outrage on the United States sailors has not yet concluded.
Eleven Chilians hays been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the affair-
Mr Patrick Egan, Ignited States Minister in Chili, is preparing to leave Valparaiso, Mr Blame 'declares that he will resort to force unless the Chiliau Government complies with the demands he has made. M. Saint Hilaire, the prominent French politician, expresses an opinion that England's withdrawal would be an injury to Egypt and to the world, pointing out, that the present state of the finances in Egypt is a proof of the splendid way in which the country has been governed by England. He considers that France has excluded herself from the occupation of Egypt The volcanic eruption iv Mokusau has completely changed the general eutlme of the country. The principal shock lasted two minutes.
