London. Mr Frederick Smith, son of the late Mr W. H. Smith, has been elected to fill the vacant seat in the House of Commons caused by the death of his father. Mr Smith polled 4952 votes against 1946 by Mr Gntheridge, the Radical candidate. Captain Younghushand, who was in charge of the exploring expedition in Central Asia, is on a visit to the Viceroy of India. The windows of the National Press office in Dublin were smashed, and a dynamite bomb was exploded in the vicinity of the biiildiug, but no one was injured. Previous attempts were made to destroy the National Press Office. The affair was premeditated, for immediately after the explosion sixty men rushed into the office shouting " Is Healy dead ?" Some alarm exists throughout the country, as it is feared that the extreme wing of the Parnellites may further develop a dynamite policy. Michael Davitt declines to stand for the Kilkenny North seat. In Cork an unruly mob pursued M.ssrs Dillon and O'Brien through the streets, yelling " Murderers ! Traitors!" Serious rioting has taken place at the Cork Convention, the mob stoning and beating the followers of Mr Justin McCarthy. The military were called out to assist the police in escorting Messrs Dillon and O'Brien to their hotel, which is strongly guarded. In the course of a speech, Mr J. Morley, M.P., said he did not regret that he had given six of the best years of his life to the cause of Ireland. He denounced Mr Chamberlain for hitting below the belt Avhen speaking at Sunderland, and scathingly quoted some of the previous speeches delivered by that hon gentleman. A collision between the Boston and the Charlewood occurred off the Eddystone Lighthouse. The captain's daughter and six of the crew were the only persons on board who were saved. The Boston was not damaged by the collision. It is reported that a Scotcli railway pool is being formed to absorb all the lines in Scotland. Obituary — Lieutenant - Colonel Hewett, the last of the English officers who saw the fight at Waterloo, lefcat 9G. Mr Morley, speaking at the United Kingdom Alliance, said he would support the exteusion of the local option franchise, but was personally in favour of a direct veto.
