Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY. OCT. 22, 1891. The Otaki Electorate.
We regret that in our previous de- { scription of the Otaki electorate an error was made, which may have f misled some of our readers. The r proper boundaries are as follows, as •• taken from the Gazette : — \ Otaki comprises Horowhenua v \ County ; the whole of Manawatu \ County, excepting the portion of •" Mount Stewart Riding which lies J east of the road from Halcombe to E Palmerston by way of Sections 98, i 94, and 77, Block XIII, Oroua Survey District ; together with the Bid- t ings of Mungaroa, "Wainuiomata. ] and Horokiwi, of Hutt County ; and ] that portion of Epuni Riding situated t to the north-east of the road leading ] northwards from the Borough of : Lower Hutt, past Belmont and up , the valley of the Hutt, through Sec- , sions 51, 425, 208, 428, 431, 336, 435, 434, and 433, to Seotion 436, ' and via the last-mentioned seotion to ] Horokiwi Hiding. This district ( comprises also the Borough ot Fox- : ton and Kapiti Island. We hardly know how to view this ; change. We are mercifully relieved of the Borough of Palmerston, but in return our boundaries are stretched to Pahautanui, and down almost to the Hutt, We have a proper farming constituency, but except on that point, have no connected interests. We should have thought that some different arrangement might have been made, and think that the objections, so apparent, should be laid before the Commissioners. Still we would rather have it as it is, than that Palmerston should have any share in our representation. The last election, with the candidate the Horongh chiefly supported, is sufficient. Why the Electorate should be styled Otaki, we cannot understand, as that township cannot lay much claim to importance. Previously a somewhat similar district was known as Foxton, after the only Borough within its boundaries ; as it still remains the only Borough why not retain the name? Foxton is also the oentral position, so far as population goes. If there is any objection to the Borough being the god-father, Horowhenua would be a more fitting name.
