N.Z. Hemp.
A 1 oiiilon hemp broker, writing ,-m tho subject of New Zealand hemp, by the last mail, draws the attention oi" bankers, merchants, and shippers to the Bevious check likely to accrue io this trade unless the highly oh-
jectionable practice of dumping New I 'Zealand hemp be discontinued, says the Chronicle. The dumping (or cx'ra pressure) put on the I'ftles by shipowners or shippers of New Zealand hemp, is a matfer of serious moment. Unlike wool (with its elastic nature) hemp, once dumped, becomes hard aud matted, and the system oi dumping adopted in the" former article without hurt is totally unsuitable and to s^me oy^it, prejndical to hemp. Many cases hay" arisen in which hairs dumped (dr compressed) by shipowners or their n gents have been so seriously affected that the binders or bands of hemp — as delivered origi* nally at the shipping pott — 1 aye been so loosened that the bill of lading marks and identities have not only been lost or destroyed, but a considerable expense has also been inclined for re-tk'htening. A fur ther and greater grievance to shippels is to be found in the fact that parcels of various marks are promiscuously dumped together, without any regard to the specific obligations and eonvenants, under the usual bills of lading clause " that bales are to be delivcivrl in the like good order and condition." Each and every mark should be kept intact ; whereas at present, without regard to cousequences the marks of various consignees are mixed together at the wiil and caprice of the dumpers uiJM| the same bill of lading, and I^J parontly without any thought wM after expenses or consequencs Ifl
