King Don.
». — - » ..*- --" Pakeha" in the WanganuiiZsraTaJ states that the following will show 5 how King Don was bred :— In the early days Captain Trafford, of Eangitikei, gave some of the boys of that district a pony each ; after which he made up a race for them in which all these ponies were run. After the race he gave each boy a' chance to purchase their mount at a low price, and Mr D. Scott, a boy then, bought his mount, s which was a good one. Mr Donalcl Fraser had at the time a right good stock horse, which ne had purchased from the Maoris on the coast ; he was a grey in colour, and was also a stallion. Mr Scott's pony was stinted to him, and the foal was, when aged, put to old Don Juan, the result being that good steeplechaser King Don, wh6 took first prize as a weight oarrying hack at the Wanganui A. and P. Show, and Abolition, another of Mr Scott's breeding, took second prize at the same show. This mare was then put to the king of all our sires—^Traducer — and Lady Mary was the result of the union. The following year she was stinted' to Golden Grape, the result being Parikarangaranga, afterwards named ' Christmas. All of these horses were fine big upstanding ones, and also first-class steepleohasers and hurdle horses, winning events both at Wanganui and at Auckland.
