A Ride With a Friend to the Sea Beach.

•.■ « How pleasant was our ride that afternoon ! The day was perfect — warm and bright; the air Seemed sleeping —not a breath stirred any where, Although the snow-capped mountains, blue and clear, Proclaimed that winter still was reigning here : The village now was left behind, and soon Our path was winding in and out between Low swelling mounds, that rose on either hand, Soft rounded shapes of pure and silvery sand, Adorned with tufts of vegetation bright, Deep orange making contrast strange with white, While here and there, enlivening the scene Were lovely little birds that seemed at home Where tiny lakelets their clear waters spread Reflecting true, the blue and white o'erhead. One ridge alone now hid our goal from sight, We crossed, and then beheld, with pure delight A long and dazzling line of snow white foam And Ithere in all its beauty lay the sea A scene of peace ! with all its mighty power Held in reserve against some other hour. Thy charms, 0 lovely Nature, never cloy, And they are given us richly to enjoy For they lie round us, bountiful and free. R.D.— Foxton, July 28fch, 1891.
