Manukau.
(from our own correspondent.) i v _; 1 Our littlo township still goes on 1 improving. The two comfortable P hotels on either side of the station are no doubt a source^of wonder to * passers by, for on looking around there seems little prospect of business. 5 However, our district is more thickly ' populated than a traveller by rail would imagine, and both occupants 5 seem satisfied with their lot. ' The contractors are busily en- ' gaged in clearing and forming the " back streets of the township, which 1 when completed will greatly add to - the appearance of the place and the ;. comfort of those whose houses are '• built on them. 1 An Oddfellows Lodge is fairly started now and at its last meeting quite a number of gentlemen were proposed for membership. It is cvi- " dent that the settlers recognise the wisdom of providing against sickness or accident, Speaking oi accidents reminds me that yesterday an unfortunate man who was lushfalling drove an aie deeply into his foot causing a dangerous wound. His mates endeavoured to induce the evening train to stop, but were not successfu'. So they had oither to carry him to Otaki or w*iit till morning, there heing no other means of getting him to the Hospi al. The train passing through wi bout ati-pping twice B. week is a source of great inconvenience to travellers and others who come up hoping to get back the same day, only to find that the train does not stop. Another great need is a telegraph or telephone station. It would be a great boon not only to Manukau hut a'l the district as it would save a ride of six of seven miles to Otaki. -*■ _ _»_-_-_-_-»_»....—-,--1-.. i. ... ,
