Floods in Melbourne.

Tremendous rains have fallen throughout the Colony, and considerable damage is reported. ; ,Fqui' and, a half. inches of r&in fell inth^e;city since, 1 o'clock on Saturday Moaning.' The water rose rapidly at Toorak and South. Yarra, and in some instances families had to be rescued from the Houses in boats. Over 150 families have been rendered homeless ,• at^Bichniopd* and 850..persons "sver^e J driven from4heir honieg at Toorak. Flemington racecourse is under water; and an . extensive portion of the Adelaide railway line has been washed away. McCulloch's foundry in the city was undermined by flood water,; and. the building collapsed. The damage is estimated at £5000. The 'factories on the south side ' of the river are submerged, and the course of the Yarra presents a scene of desolation for miles. Terrace after terrace of houses on the South side, in Toorak and further eastward are completely submerged. Whitney's cartridge factory has sufiered severHy. „ ',} .' ■ ,-, The floods are the most severe since 1868. . " Heavy rains have fallen up country, and Wagga is again inundated. Railway communication with Sydney •is interrupted. Later. '< Although the water is falling, there ara still many houses which are inundated to the extent of 10 to 15 feet.
