The Rev. Ch'as. Spurgeon is slightly better. An embankment containing ten million tons of Masonry and timber has broken clown and blocked the Manchester Ship Canal. He declares that his Royal Highness is in a perfectly solvent position financially, and' goes on to say that the evidence in the. Baccarat scandal did not reveal that the Prince was 'in any way implicated. He adds that the Prince is eager to be intrusted with serious work, such as that of the suggested Commission on Imperial Federation. ' The bakers of London are demanding shorter hours, increased pay, and improved sanitary conpitions. The Queen i*eview.s the troops at Aldershot on Thursday. •► An animated debate took place in' the House of Commons last night on the question of the amount to be contributed for defence by Singapore." A number of members urged tlie re- ] duction of the sum, but Mr Goschen and Colonel Stanhope contended) that Singapore was fairly treated, and the reduction was negatived. The collapse of the Manchester Canal embankment was due to a heavy tide in the Mersey, which forced the water behind the uncompleted work and burst it down. The construction of the canal will be further delayed by this untoward accident.
