Heresy in King's College London.
For continuation of reading matter see fourth page.)
Professor Momerie, who holds the professorship of Logic and metaphysics in King's college, London, has reeeritly published such extraordinary gtatenients in regard to the Bible and the Christian religion, that thePrineipal of the college brought the matter before the Council, considering that the opinions expressed were inconsistent with the Professor's position as a clergyman in the Church of England, and especially with the particular office of preparing young men : for ordination. The Council after due consultation resolved not to remove the professor, but simply to remove the chair from the depart ment of theology to the general literature and science department, where It was less likely to prove injurious. That the council were justified in depriving the professor of the duty of teaching theology, will be seen from the following quotations from his publications. " Between the covers of this little Volume (the Bible) we find opinions as 'diver*.' and contraditftpry'aM hnv» •'iv'r existed in the World. And in particular we can trace in it the development of the
idea of God from barbarism- up to Hegel."
:." There, is a practically infinite difference between the God of the Patriarchs, who was alwas repenting, and the God of the Apostles " .** There is a super •human cruelty in the Jehovah ot the Pentateuch " the professor charges the modern clergyiqa.Q with, the grave fault of speaking V«aboat inspiration an revelation as if he did not know that much of . the teaching of the Bible has been r ejjVtalled and even surpassed, in other s^3acred literatures, and that some of the sayings of Christ Himself— including even the golden rule — had been anticipated by " pagans " hundreds of years before the Christian era. M < "The modern priest talks about miracles— Gadarene pigs and what not aa he might have done at a timo \yhen natural laws had never been hjaard of, when every one bolieved; not in the uniformity, but in the irregularity of -Nature. •;♦*" It is strange that porsons who Have read 'the 25th ehnptor of St Matthew, should still believe in tho dootcino of .lustifioation by Faith."
