Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 1891. Difference of Opinion.

It is a fact that the present Government have made numerous appointments to the Commission of the Peace. There is nothing to he surprised at,, as after the general election the victorious party signalise their triumph by appointing prominent supporters of their men, as Justices of the Peace. This erratic system of obtaining gentlemen to administer justice is to be deplored, but we cannot see why the Government of to-day are to be blamed more than previous ones. We have learnt that in Palmerston the appointments that have been made, have not been made upon the advice of the member, he being in opposition to the Government, but have been made on the suggestion of the beaten candidate. We also are aware that the appointments are not viewed with favour by the other gentlemen who reside in that town and hold the Commission. As long as this practise is permitted so long will unsuitable persons bt selected, and it would be more satisfactory if the whole Commission! were abolished and some defined principle in selection acted upon. We are not objecting to the appointments made, as we do not know the gentlemen, but we can easily understand that under the circumstances they may not be satisfactory even though the Government did their best, their choice was undoubtedly limited. It is of no use asking if more justices were needed, there was an election, and there were promises to be satisfied.
