■• '■■ ♦ The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Library Buildings yesterday, at 2.80 p.m. Present — Grs McMillan, Nye, Startup, Austin, Williams and Jenks. Owing to the absence of the Mayor Cr Nye was voted to the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — INWARDS. Horowhenua County County Council. I have the honor, by direction of this Council, to state that no remittance has been received from the Borough of Foxton for the quarter beginning 81st Dec, 1890, and 81st March, 1891, of £5, making a total of flO due in terms of your agreement with this Council, reference to the copy in your office will probably afford you a better explanation of the liability. lam therefore to ask you to be good enough to give the matter your earliest attention. W. Alzdorf, offering to amend his price so as to include all land, outside of present lithographed plan, for £15. J. Hillary, asking value for a small outbuilding on the ferry reserve, or permission to take it away. J. Hillary, calling attention to open drain in Union-street. Mary Carroll, stating that owing to her husband's death, and having four small children, and having no means of support, she has to ask for some assistance. W. G. Eobinson, wanting to know if the Council would let the Eecreation reserve near the racecourse. MONTHLY KEPOET, I have the honour to report on the following works for the month of May, ending 30th : — Mathers contract for metalling — This contract is now finished, all but. about 85 yards. It was lound necessary to stop the work, carting metal. Owing to the wet weather and the bad state of the roads I found it a waste ot money to continue the work any longer at this time of the year. I gave the contractors notice to stop the work leaving the matter for the Council to deal with. J. Symons' contract for carting 800 yards of metal on the Wirokino Road— This contract is finished and passed for payment. Owing to the soft state of the road it was found necessary to cart from 80 to 90 yards of .sand to fill up the ruts. An agreement was made with J Symons to cart the sand at Is 3d per yard. This is an extra. The daymen — It was found necessary to employ C. Spring to assist in spreading the metal and other repairs, to put the roads in a fair state of repair before the winter sets in, and it may be found necessary to employ him for another month or so to finish repairing the different sections of roads. Geo. Nye. The following resolutions were agreed to : — Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Startup, That the lamp opposite the post office be removed to the post office side of Main-street. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Williams, That Mr E. S. Thynne be granted permission to erect a verandah in front of his premises in Main-street. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr Jenks, That Alzdorf's offer be accepted for map of the Borough at a cost of £25. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr Jenks, That Mrs Carroll be
illowed Charitable Aid according to icale. Proposed by Cr Jenks seconded by 3r Williams, That Mr J. Hillary's letLers be referred to the Borough Works Committee to report therein. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That the sum of £5 be paid to the Horowhenua County Council, amount due forw maintenance of Kereru road, to*tiß!£ \ March 1891, and that the Coutfeil be informed that from that date this Council cannot see its "way to pay any further sum. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr McMillan, That Mr Blake be allowed the sum of £10 as compensation for loss of room, and that Jenks, Austin, and the mover be appointed a committee to make fresh arrangements with custodian of Library forthwith. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Startup, That a committee be formed for the purpose of considering a scheme for a water supply for the Borough, to report at next meeting of this Council and that the following committee, consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Nye, Austin and the mover, • be appointed. Proposed by Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Williams, That tenders be called for renting the recreation reserve for the term of one year. Tenders to be in by Saturday next, June 6th, and that Crs Nye and Williams be appointed to open and accept same. Mr W. G. Kcbinson be notified of same. Only one tender was received for the old ferry house, which was from Martin Boesin at five shillings a week. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr Startup, That Boesin's tender be accepted for ferry house. The usual rate' notices were passed making a general rate of Is^d and a library rate of Id in the £, to become due on 2nd June. Proposed by Cr Startup, seconded by Cr Austin, That the ferry house be insured against fire in the sum of £50. The following accounts were passed for payment : — C. &J. Symons, £88 14s 6d ; do, £8 ; T. Gibson, £6 ss ; Postmaster, 10s ; G. Didsbury 5s 3d ; G. Denton 7s 5d ; J. Sullivan, £6 17s 6d ; C. Spring, £6 17s 8d ; C. Adin, £5 2s 6d ; Charitable Aid, Pitts, £1 19s ; Audit A/c, £3 ; J. Mathers, £54 2s 2d ; Manawatu Hebald, £15 10s 6d ; Horowhenua County, £5 ; H. Blake, £10.
